The Pitcher Talk: How to Fill Up When Life Empties You Out

After surviving the loss of their first son, Taylor and her husband were shocked to learn that their youngest baby was not expected to be born alive. The Pitcher Talk tells the story of how she carried, delivered, and mothered her fragile son, Taylor learned how to follow God's healing path to care for herself and fill her pitcher to overflowing in the face of grief and uncertainty.

She believed the words of Jesus in Luke 6:21,

Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.

and Yahweh's promise to the Israelites in Psalm 81:10,

I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.

Her continual prayer, "But how, Lord, when I'm so empty?" was slowly answered as she went to therapy and learned to care for herself the way God intended her to. Like Hagar in Genesis 21, Taylor became acquainted with "The God Who Sees Me," who faithfully provided for her and her children in the middle of the desert. From this journey of filling her own pitcher, the Pitcher Talk was born.

Beginning with Genesis 1:31, the Pitcher Talk emphasizes that we are made "very good" in God's image. Even the weaknesses and human frailties that leave us feeling "less than" are part of our "very good"-ness. When we trust God that our physical, emotional, relational, esteem, and purpose needs are very good (because He made them), we can learn how to honor those needs and fill our pitchers to overflowing.
