It was a small piece of note book paper fastened to the refrigerator with the words " To Mom & Dad- DON'T READ UNTIL I LEAVE FOR SCHOOL" inscribed upon it that changed everything. Of course, like every conservative, boundary-honoring parent, I immediately opened it right in front of my kid as they ate breakfast. I have heard it said (Probably by Greg Coles) that often in a Christian home when a child comes out of the closet the parents step right in. That was true for us, at least for a hot moment. The truth is, being an LGBTQ+ parent is not for the faint of heart.
As a single session, I share our journey: the wins, many losses, the learning, grieving, celebrating, and community rebuilding that our family has gone through. This is an honest and raw conversation with an open space for Q&A.
