How the church can meet the needs of those who are being abused

I remember talking to a pastor who told me that “IF” I was telling the truth about my husband that my life was “a mixed up mess.” He told me that I had to get rid of my children’s pets. He made other “recommendations” that sounded more like orders. He told me to call the police should I need a ride somewhere. His "advice" hurt. It was invasive. And, in the end, it wasn’t helpful.

What should the church respond when a Christian woman says she’s being abused?
