Diversity and Inclusion - also known as - Cultural Competency

When we think of the term “diversity”, we often think of the term “differences.” Characteristics such as: race, nationality, religion, age, gender, and more are used to deem individuals as different. Differences are the keys to success. Success in the workplace is accomplished by differences, success in education is accomplished by differences, and success in our communities is accomplished by differences. Being open to accepting differences is the key to successful individuals, groups, and organizations.

In the classroom diversity is defined by learning styles, teaching styles, and student characteristics. We believe that higher education affords us the opportunity to see life through the lens of others by creating an environment that is diverse and supportive of all people. Accepting differences can be challenging, however great benefits are produced as a result of diversity. Diversity affords us the opportunity to glean from others, to grow in knowledge, and to build confidence in others. Diversity creates the platform to inspire others to grow without the limitations of their current boundaries, but to move forward knowing that there are unlimited opportunities out there for all people. Diversity is important for increasing knowledge allover the world one teacher and one student at a time.
